The Guide
Which Sled Ride, Which Kennel, and When There Is Snow
Drive your own team or sit back while a musher drives; half an hour to Kvaløya or an hour and a half to the Tamok valley. Here is what each tour costs, how long you spend on the sled, and what the season depends on.
Dog sledding from Tromsø is a half-day trip to a husky kennel outside the city, most often on Kvaløya, half an hour away, where two people share a sled and take turns driving the team and riding in it. The season runs from about mid-November to early April, whenever there is snow. The tour we would book is Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour, with 70 to 80 minutes on the trail, rated 4.9 from 4,410 reviews and from $362 a person (checked October 2026).

How a sledding tour runs
Almost every tour starts in central Tromsø, at a hotel door or the Prostneset bus terminal by the harbour, and takes you by minibus or coach to the kennel. There you change into a thermal suit and boots, get a short briefing on how to stand on the runners, brake and steer, and meet your dogs. Then the guide’s sled leads the way out. On most tours two people share a sled: one drives standing on the runners, the other sits in the basket, and you swap halfway or several times. Afterwards there is a hot drink by a fire, often in a lavvu, and time with the dogs. With the transfer, the whole thing takes about four hours.
The part that varies most is the time on the sled. It is up to 30 minutes on the short Breivikeidet ride and 70 to 80 minutes on Arctic Adventure Tours’ trail.

| Dog sledding in the Tamok valley | Tamok valley, 95 min | You and a partner | Half the camp time each | $367 | 4.9 (1,533) |

Drive the sled, or ride in it
Driving means standing on the two runners at the back, holding the handlebar, braking with a foot brake and leaning into the bends. On the uphill stretches you step off and push. Most people manage it after the briefing, but it takes balance and some strength, and the self-drive tours rule out pregnant guests and people with back problems. Riding means sitting in the basket and taking photos. On the shared self-drive tours you do both. If nobody in your group wants to drive, or a child is too young, Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s guided tour puts a musher on the runners. Self-drive or passenger goes through who suits which.
Where the kennels are
Kvaløya, the big island west of Tromsø, has the nearest kennels: Arctic Adventure Tours and Tromsø Villmarkssenter on Straumsvegen are 25 to 30 minutes from the centre, and the transfer is short enough that a morning tour leaves the afternoon free. The Breivikeidet valley, 50 minutes east, has the Lyngen Alps behind it. Camp Aspemo near Mestervik is an hour south, and Camp Tamok, deep in the Tamok valley, takes about 90 minutes each way; a day there runs to six or seven hours. Farther still, a private kennel at Øverbygd in Målselv is about two hours’ drive.
When there is snow
The tours need snow on the trails, and at our check the first dates on sale for the 2026-27 winter were between 9 and 17 November for most Kvaløya and Breivikeidet tours, and 1 or 2 December for the short Breivikeidet ride and Camp Tamok’s advanced tour. The season runs to late March or early April. In a thin year, Destination Tromsø’s Fun and Easy tour runs on wheeled wagons. From 27 November to 15 January the sun stays below the horizon (Visit Tromsø), so daytime tours run in a few hours of blue twilight. The best time for dog sledding in Tromsø covers each month.
What it costs
Most half-day sled rides cost $290 to $370 a person in October 2026. The difference is mostly time on the sled and the meal: the $290 short ride gives up to half an hour, the $360-370 tours 45 to 80 minutes with cake or a hot lunch. Dog sledding prices in Tromsø has the full ladder, private tours included.
Huskies without a sled, and the northern lights
If the budget or the snow does not stretch to a sled ride, Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s evening husky visit costs about half: dinner in a lavvu, the dogs and the puppies, and a chance of the northern lights over the camp. Husky farm visits compares the visits, and dog sledding and the northern lights covers the evening sled tours. If you are weighing the welfare question first, is dog sledding ethical? sets out the Norwegian rules and what to look for, and the dog sledding FAQ answers the rest.

Drive Your Own Husky Team on Kvaløya
Arctic Adventure Tours' self-drive tour: a minibus from the Scandic Ishavshotel, an Arctic suit, boots and mittens, a short driving lesson, 70 to 80 minutes on the trail with a partner on your sled, and hot drinks and cake in a lavvu, about 4 hours in all, as listed in October 2026, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Children from 7; up to 170 kg per sled for two. Starting from $362 per person.

Tromsø Dog Sledding FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a husky sled ride from Tromsø, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
From about $290 a person for a short self-drive ride to about $370 for a half day with 45 to 80 minutes on the sled, read in US dollars on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Moa Hundseid's tour on Kvaløya is about $430, an evening of sledding and snowmobiling about $590 at its usual price, and a private tour near Bardufoss about $490, without the bus. Every price here includes transport from Tromsø unless it says otherwise. Dog sledding prices in Tromsø sets them side by side.
Roughly from mid-November to early April, as long as there is snow on the trails. The sledding tours we list open their first bookable dates between 9 November and 2 December 2026, and Camp Aspemo gives its season as 1 November to 7 April. Snow decides it: one Breivikeidet tour runs on wheeled wagons when the snow is missing. The best time for dog sledding in Tromsø goes month by month.
Yes, on most tours: two people share a sled, one driving and one riding, and swap on the way. Arctic Adventure Tours gives you 70 to 80 minutes on the trail this way; Tromsø Villmarkssenter's self-drive tour is about 45 minutes and takes drivers from 16. No experience is needed, but drivers push the sled uphill and keep their balance on the runners. Self-drive or passenger explains the difference.
Yes: on Tromsø Villmarkssenter's guided husky sledding, a musher drives a sled you share with one or two other guests, for about 45 minutes. It suits all ages, and lunch of reindeer stew in a tent follows. The passenger sled tour has the details.
Kvaløya, the island west of the city, is 25 to 40 minutes away; Breivikeidet about 50 minutes; Camp Aspemo near Mestervik about an hour; Camp Tamok in the Tamok valley about 90 minutes. The times are the tours' own bus and minibus times; the private kennel at Øverbygd is a little over two hours' drive. The map on our homepage shows where each one is.
It depends on the tour: from 4 on the short Breivikeidet ride, 7 on Arctic Adventure Tours' self-drive tour, 12 at Camp Aspemo and 16 on the self-drive tours at Tromsø Villmarkssenter and the advanced tour at Camp Tamok. On the Breivikeidet ride, every child from 4 to 11 must be with an adult. The guided ride at Tromsø Villmarkssenter, where a musher drives, has no minimum age in its listing.
Yes, on most self-drive tours: 170 kg for the two people sharing a sled on Arctic Adventure Tours, 118 kg a person at Tromsø Villmarkssenter, 120 kg at Camp Tamok and 110 kg on Best Arctic's tour. The limits protect the dogs and the person on the runners. Check the listing before booking; the figures here were read in October 2026.
Your own warm base layers, wool if you have it, plus a hat, gloves and warm socks; the tours lend the outer layer. Every sledding tour we list lends a thermal suit and boots, and most add mittens and a hat. Phones drain fast in the cold, so keep yours inside the suit.
Only on an evening tour, and only as a chance: no tour can promise the lights. Visit Tromsø gives the aurora season as late August to early April, which overlaps the whole sledding season. Daytime tours in December run in the blue light of the polar night. Dog sledding and the northern lights lists the evening options.
It can be, and Norwegian law sets the floor: the Animal Welfare Act, and the Food Safety Authority's rules for dogs kept outdoors, such as a windproof dog house for every dog and time off the tether every week. What you can check yourself is how the dogs look, how much they run, and how the kennel answers questions about rest and retired dogs. Is dog sledding ethical? goes through it.
Yes: Tromsø Villmarkssenter on Kvaløya runs an evening husky visit with dinner by the fire, and in summer and autumn a husky hike and puppy visit. Both are about half the price of a sled ride. Husky farm visits in Tromsø compares them.
From 20 to 30 minutes on the short rides to 70 to 80 minutes on Arctic Adventure Tours' self-drive tour. Most half-day tours give 30 to 60 minutes on the sled inside about four hours with the transfer, the gear and the briefing; a full day in the Tamok valley is about seven hours with three on the road.
The tours change or cancel for safety, and you are offered another time, another activity or a refund. Destination Tromsø's Breivikeidet tour runs on wheeled wagons when snow is lacking, and its tours offer a reschedule, a substitute or a full refund when conditions are dangerous. Every tour here can also be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.
No: every tour starts with a briefing on how to stand, brake and steer, and the guide's sled goes first. You do need basic fitness to stand on one leg on the runners, push uphill and lift the sled if it tips. People with back or heart problems, and pregnant guests, are asked not to drive.
