The Best Time for Dog Sledding in Tromsø

When to go dog sledding in Tromsø: the season from mid-November to early April, snow, the polar night, what October offers, and the months to book (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

The dog sledding season in Tromsø runs from about mid-November to early April, as long as there is snow on the trails. For the most light and the most reliable snow, go from February to mid-March; for sledding in the blue twilight of the polar night, go from late November to mid-January. At our check on 29 October 2026 the first bookable dates were 9 November on Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour, from $362 a person and rated 4.9 from 4,410 reviews (checked October 2026), and mid-November to early December on the others.

October and early November: before the snow

No sled tours were on sale for October at our check, and the first dates for the 2026-27 winter were between 9 and 17 November. If you are in Tromsø before then, the kennels still take visitors: Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s husky hike and puppy training walks had dates in the next few days, its evening husky visit runs, and Nordlipolar Adventures at Nordkjosbotn runs husky cart rides “before the snow arrives”. Husky farm visits compares them.

Mid-November to mid-January: the dark season

The first weeks depend on how much snow has fallen. Destination Tromsø says its Fun and Easy tour at Breivikeidet runs on wheeled wagons when snow is lacking, and its Breivikeidet and Tamok tours offer another time, another activity or a refund if conditions are dangerous. Book a date you can move, and keep the free cancellation window in mind.

From about 27 November to 15 January the sun does not rise above the horizon in Tromsø, and even after it returns the mountains hide it from the city until later in January (Visit Tromsø). Daytime sledding then happens in a few hours of twilight, blue and pink over the snow, and the Skibotn valley kennels warn that parts of a December ride may be in darkness (Visit Tromsø listing). It is also when the evening tours have the longest nights for the northern lights.

February and March: light and snow

February and March are the core of the season, with the days lengthening fast. This is the busiest stretch: of the newest 350 reviews of Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour, read on 29 October 2026, 310 were written in February and March. Book these weeks early. The northern lights season runs to early April, so evening tours still work, with shorter nights.

April: the end

The season ends when the snow on the trails gives out. Camp Aspemo gives 7 April as its last day, and Arctic Adventure Tours had April guests in 2026. In a warm spring the end comes sooner. Late March is the safer last booking.
