Updated October 2026

A dog sledding tour from Tromsø costs about $290 to $370 a person for a half day, transport and winter clothing included, in October 2026. The cheaper tours mostly give you less time on the sled or a longer bus ride: about $290 buys up to 30 minutes at Breivikeidet, about $360 buys 45 to 80 minutes on Kvaløya with cake or a hot lunch. One of the two lowest regular prices is Destination Tromsø’s short ride at Breivikeidet, from $290 a person, rated 4.9 from 1,447 reviews (checked October 2026).

What the extra money buys

Time on the sled is the clearest difference. Divide the price by the minutes and the short Breivikeidet ride costs about $10 a minute of sledding, while Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour costs under $5, because it runs 70 to 80 minutes for about $70 more. The second difference is food: the $360-370 tours at Tromsø Villmarkssenter include a hot lunch of reindeer stew, the cheaper ones cake and a hot drink. The third is distance. Camp Tamok is 90 minutes each way, so its tours cost more in time than in money: the advanced tour takes six and a half hours.

The exception is Best Arctic’s tour to Harkin Husky Farm: 45 to 60 minutes of self-drive sledding for about $290, but an hour and a half on the coach each way, a minimum age of 12 and a 110 kg limit. What the money does not buy is a different kind of ride: every self-drive tour here puts two guests on a sled behind a guide.

When the cheaper ride is enough

Book the short ride if you mainly want the experience and the photos, if you have children from 4 (the Kvaløya self-drive tour starts at 7), or if you are fitting sledding into one day among several activities. Book the longer self-drive tour if driving the team is the point; 30 minutes split between two people is about 15 minutes each at the handlebar.

Costs on top of the ticket

On most tours there are none: the bus, the suit, the boots and the drinks are in the price. The exceptions are the private tour in Målselv, where the bus from Tromsø to Bardufoss is yours to pay, and the evening tour at Camp Tamok that adds snowmobiling, where a driver can buy a waiver for NOK 300 to cut the damage liability to NOK 1,000. Bring your own base layers, hat and gloves to avoid buying them in town. For evening tours with the northern lights, see dog sledding and the northern lights; for visits without a sled at half the price, husky farm visits.
