Self-Drive vs Passenger Dog Sledding

Self-drive or passenger dog sledding in Tromsø: what driving involves, ages and weight limits, time on the sled, and which tour to book for each (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Self-drive means you stand on the runners and steer your own team behind the guide’s sled; passenger means you sit in the sled while someone else drives. On most Tromsø tours you get both: two people share a sled and swap. Only if nobody in your group wants to drive, or a child is too young, is a passenger-only ride the better booking. For most people we would book Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour on Kvaløya, with 70 to 80 minutes on the trail, from $362 a person and rated 4.9 from 4,410 reviews (checked October 2026).

What driving a dog sled involves

The driver stands on two narrow runners at the back of the sled and holds a handlebar. There is a brake under your feet, and the main skill is using it: the guide will ask you to keep an even distance to the sled in front. On bends you lean, and on uphill stretches you help the dogs by pushing. If the sled tips over, you need to be able to lift it back up; Tromsø Villmarkssenter makes that a condition of its self-drive tour. Every tour starts with a briefing, and no experience is needed.

That is why the self-drive listings set limits. Arctic Adventure Tours asks for a basic level of fitness and rules out children under 7, pregnant women and people with back problems; the two people on a sled can weigh up to 170 kg together. Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s self-drive tour takes drivers from 16 up to a recommended 70, and asks that you can stand on one leg for balance.

What riding involves

The passenger sits low in the sled, in front of the driver, and takes photos. There is nothing to do except hold on, so dress for sitting still in the cold. On a shared self-drive sled the passenger swaps with the driver at a stop on the trail. On a passenger-only ride a musher, a professional sled-dog driver, stands on the runners for you.

Who should drive

If you are fit enough to stand for an hour and push uphill, drive. It is the part people remember, and on the shared tours you ride half the time anyway. Arctic Adventure Tours gives the longest time on the sled of the Kvaløya tours, and of its newest 350 reviews, read on 29 October 2026, 335 give five stars. Of the few unhappy guests, one wanted more time with the dogs before the ride: on this tour the dog time comes afterwards.

Who should ride

Book a passenger-only ride when a child is under the self-drive minimum, when someone has a bad back or is pregnant, or when nobody wants to drive. On Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s guided ride a musher drives a sled shared with one or two other guests, for about 45 minutes, and it suits all ages. Lunch of bidos, a reindeer stew, follows in a tent by the fire. A mixed group can split between Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s two tours at the same kennel: drivers from 16 on the self-drive tour, everyone else on the guided ride. They are two bookings, so check that the start times match.

If you want to choose on the day

The private tour at OffTrack Experience in Målselv lets each person in your booking drive, share the driving, or ride with the guide, and adapts the pace to the group. It is the only tour here where the choice is made at the kennel rather than at booking, and it costs more and is two hours from Tromsø.
