Dog Sledding and the Northern Lights in Tromsø

Dog sledding with a chance of the northern lights from Tromsø: the Camp Tamok night of sledding and snowmobiling, an evening run on Kvaløya, and a husky camp evening (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

You can go dog sledding with a chance of the northern lights from Tromsø on an evening tour, but no tour can promise the lights: they need a dark, clear sky and some solar activity. The longest evening on offer is Arctic Resorts’ all-in-one evening at Camp Tamok combines guided sledding, dinner and a snowmobile run to look for the aurora, about 10 hours from age 16. It is from $475 a person in current promotion (usually $593), rated 4.8 from 174 reviews (checked October 2026).

When the lights and the snow overlap

The region’s tourist board puts the aurora season at late August to early April, and the sledding season runs from about mid-November to early April. So every sledding month is also an aurora month. The difference is the length of the night: from 27 November to 15 January the sun does not rise at all, while by March it is dark only in the evening. The weather matters more than the month. Cloud hides the lights, so a clear forecast counts for more than the date.

The night at Camp Tamok

The bus leaves Tromsø’s Prostneset terminal for Camp Tamok in the Tamok valley, about 90 minutes away. You are fitted with a thermal suit, boots and mittens, meet the mushers and the dogs, and go out on a guided sled run. The sledding is the advanced, physically demanding kind: you help push uphill and through deep snow, on narrow trails with sharp turns, and both people sharing a sled must manage it. Back at the camp there is a two-course dinner in the lounge and a short talk on how the aurora forms and how to watch for it. Then you go out on snowmobiles, two to a machine and taking turns to drive, stopping to look for the lights and photograph them. Portraits are shared within 48 hours.

Limits: from 16, at least 130 cm tall, up to 120 kg, not for pregnant guests. On the snowmobile a driver’s damage liability is capped at NOK 10,000, or NOK 1,000 with a waiver bought for NOK 300. The groups are limited to 12.

Closer to town

Moa Hundseid Expedition’s tour picks up outside the Radisson Blu in Tromsø and drives 40 minutes to Kvaløya. You drive your own sled behind a guide, with a meal and hot drinks during the tour and a chance of the northern lights over the trail. It is shorter and closer than Camp Tamok, with no snowmobile.

Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s evening husky visit has no sled at all: you meet the dogs and puppies, grill marshmallows by a fire, eat bacalao in a lavvu, and watch the sky from the camp. It costs well under half the Camp Tamok night.

A daytime ride and an evening chase

If none of the evening times suit, a daytime sled ride and a separate northern lights tour on another night cover both, and spread the chance of a clear sky over two days. The best time for dog sledding shows when the snow and the dark overlap, and dog sledding prices in Tromsø has the daytime options.
