Meet the Huskies: Husky Farm Visits in Tromsø
Husky farm visits from Tromsø without a sled ride: the evening visit with dinner, husky hikes and puppy training in summer and autumn, a cart ride, prices (Oct 2026).
A husky farm visit from Tromsø is a half day at a kennel without the sled ride: you meet the dogs and the puppies, hear how they are trained, and eat by a fire, for about half the price of sledding. In the dark months the visit to book is Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s evening visit on Kvaløya, with dinner and a chance of the northern lights; from summer into autumn the same kennel takes guests on husky hikes and puppy training walks. The evening visit is from $193 a person, rated 4.6 from 1,755 reviews (checked October 2026).

Who a visit suits
A visit is the right booking when you want the dogs more than the speed. It suits young children, since the evening visit has no age limit, and anyone who cannot drive or ride a sled for health reasons. It also fits a budget: the visits cost $177 to $193 a person in October 2026, against $290 to $370 for most sled rides. In October and early November, before the snow, a visit is the only way to meet the dogs at all. If you want both, the half-day sled rides include time in the dog yard after the ride.

The evening husky visit
The minibus takes you about 30 minutes from central Tromsø to Tromsø Villmarkssenter’s camp on Kvaløya. You borrow a thermal suit and boots, go round the dog yard with a guide, and meet the puppies; the kennel keeps almost 200 Alaskan huskies (Tromsø Villmarkssenter). Then you sit by a fire grilling marshmallows, on reindeer skins outside or in a lavvu, and eat bacalao, a stew of Norwegian stockfish and tomato. If the sky clears, you watch for the northern lights from the camp. There is no sled ride and no aurora chase, and no tour can promise the lights. It runs with at least two guests.

Husky hikes and puppy training
Outside the sledding season Tromsø Villmarkssenter walks its dogs with guests. On the husky hike you set off with the dogs and a guide into the hills around the kennel, then eat lunch and chocolate cake in a lavvu and visit the puppies. The puppy training walk is shorter on the trail, an hour to an hour and a half with dogs from four weeks to adolescence, and it suits children as well as adults. Both lend rain clothes and boots. At our check on 29 October 2026 both had dates from the next few days, so they are an option for an autumn trip, when the sled tours are not running yet.
A cart ride before the snow
Nordlipolar Adventures, a small kennel at Nordkjosbotn, runs husky cart rides with a kennel and puppy visit for up to four guests: the team pulls a wheeled cart on the trails, with snacks and hot drinks by a fire after. Transport is extra, and it had five reviews in October 2026, so treat it as new. It suits an October or early November visitor who wants to feel a team pull.

About the kennel
Tromsø Villmarkssenter sits on Straumsvegen on Kvaløya, just outside the city. Its founder, Tove Sørensen, has finished Finnmarksløpet, the long-distance race across Finnmark, 19 times, and the kennel’s dogs have raced in it and in the Iditarod (Tromsø Villmarkssenter). On a visit you can ask how the racing and the tourist teams are kept, rested and retired. Is dog sledding ethical? lists the questions worth asking, and self-drive or passenger covers the sled rides.
