Dog Sledding in Tromsø: Frequently Asked Questions

Dog sledding in Tromsø answered: minimum ages and weight limits by tour, what to wear, where the pickups are, fitness, photos, weather and refunds (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Most dog sledding tours from Tromsø take children from 7, set a weight limit of 110 to 120 kg a person or 170 kg for two on a sled, lend you the thermal suit and boots, and pick you up in the city centre. The exceptions matter: a guided ride where a musher drives takes any age, and the short Breivikeidet ride takes children from 4. The tour we would book for most groups is Arctic Adventure Tours’ self-drive tour, from $362 a person, rated 4.9 from 4,410 reviews (checked October 2026).

Ages and limits from the GetYourGuide listings, read on 29 October 2026. Where a weight limit is given per person, it applies to each guest.

If your group mixes ages, the simplest booking is a guided ride, where nobody drives, or the short Breivikeidet ride. With small children on any tour that includes transport, ask about a child seat: Tromsø Villmarkssenter asks you to bring your own car seat or come by car.

How fit do you need to be?

For driving, fit enough to stand on the runners for up to an hour, balance on one leg, push the sled uphill and lift it if it tips. People with back or heart problems and pregnant guests are asked not to drive, and the advanced Camp Tamok tour wants good strength and balance from both people on a sled. Riding needs no fitness beyond getting in and out of a low sled. No previous experience is needed on any tour.

What should you wear?

The tours lend the outer layer: a thermal suit, winter boots, and on most of them mittens and a hat. Underneath, wear warm base layers, wool if you have it, warm socks, and bring a hat, gloves and a scarf. Phones and camera batteries drain fast in the cold, so carry them inside the suit. There is little room on the sled for a tripod; Arctic Adventure Tours lets you leave one in its equipment room.

Where the buses and minibuses go: Kvaløya 25 to 30 minutes from the pickups, Breivikeidet 50, Camp Aspemo about an hour, Camp Tamok about 90.

The pickup points are all a few minutes’ walk apart around the harbour in central Tromsø. Camp Aspemo also lets you drive yourself to Balsfjordveien 608 at Mestervik, arriving an hour after the bus would leave Tromsø.

What if the weather is bad or there is no snow?

Tours change or cancel for safety, and the kennels offer another time, another activity or a refund. Destination Tromsø’s Fun and Easy tour runs on wheeled wagons when there is too little snow. Every tour on this site can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. The sled ride itself can be shortened by weather and snow: Destination Tromsø gives 30 to 40 minutes on one of its tours, “subject to weather and snow conditions”.

Can you see the northern lights?

Only on an evening tour, and only as a chance. Dog sledding and the northern lights compares the evening tours, and the best time for dog sledding the months.

Is it ethical, and can you just meet the dogs?

Norwegian law sets minimum standards for sled dogs kept outdoors; is dog sledding ethical? explains them and what to ask a kennel. If you would rather not sled at all, husky farm visits cover the evening visit and the autumn husky hikes. For prices, see what dog sledding costs in Tromsø.
